ABSTRACT

Introduction: Thyroglossal duct cyst (TGDC) is a common congenital anomaly but carcinoma arising in thyroglossal duct cyst is rare, occurring in 1% of cases.
Case Report: We report a case of a 22-year-old female who was reported to have TGDC on radiology and fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC). However, histopathological examination of TGDC post-Sistrunk procedure revealed an incidental presence of papillary carcinoma arising within a thyroglossal duct cyst which invaded its wall as well as involved a resection margin.
Conclusion: The diagnosis of thyroglossal duct cyst carcinoma can be missed due to its rarity.
