Abstract
Sage (Salvia) species have been used for centuries, worldwide as culinary herbs as well as traditional remedies for the treatment of many common health complications and their symptoms. In recent decades, more studies have been performed on the effect of sage in preventing, controlling, or curing various diseases naturally and more safely. A number of sage family members especially Salvia officinalis (common sage) and their components have shown to be beneficial in protecting the body against oxidative stress, free radical damages, angiogenesis, inflammation, bacterial and virus infection, etc. Several studies suggest that sage might potentially provide novel natural treatments for the relief or cure of many serious and life-threatening diseases in addition to treating minor common illnesses such as depression, dementia, obesity, diabetes, lupus, autism, heart disease and cancer.

Keywords: Sage (Salvia species), Salvia officinalis, Traditional remedies
